The top five companies accounted for 65% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that ArcelorMittal filed the most batteries patents within the mining industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 15 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 3 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting with 13 batteries patent filings, Jinchuan Group (7 filings), and Kobe Steel (6 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 25% share of total patent filings

The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the mining industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 25%, followed by Japan (15%) and the US (8%). The share represented by China was 3% higher than the 22% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
