Halcrow is an award-winning international consultancy, specialising in planning, design and management services for infrastructure development worldwide. It has more than 6 000 employees, working in more than 80 offices across 70 countries.
Established in Britain in 1868, Halcrow is owned by a trust and employee shareholders. It has performed key roles for some of the largest multi-disciplinary projects around the world.
Halcrow in Australia
From our offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, we have been working for clients throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region since 1993.
With our depth and breadth of technical expertise, Halcrow provides specialist engineering and analysis services to mining teams to achieve safe, economical and timely outcomes.
Geotechnical engineering for the mining industry
The Halcrow geotechnical team provides ground investigation planning, implementation and geological interpretation for mine infrastructure developments and foundations.
These services include ground improvement and piling design and assessment. We can independently review geotechnical reports prepared by others.
We assess and design support systems for slopes, portal development and the use of steel sets and concrete / shotcrete. We also provide rock embankment stabilisation design.
Tunnels and underground spaces
Halcrow has an international centre of tunnelling excellence based in Australia. For mining applications we provide shaft design, including design and specification of support systems, including segmental linings, temporary works and underground excavation design.
Other services include pre-excavation and post-excavation rock mass grouting design for ground improvement, site inspections and monitoring and field advice. We also design segmental lined shafts for support of ventilation or ore haulage shafts in weak ground.
Structural design for the mining industry
Typical designs include foundations for buildings and underground structures, excavations and foundations and retaining walls, including timber, sheet piles and block-work.
Halcrow can also assist with crane foundations for all crane types, plugs and bulkheads to resist groundwater pressures and reinforced concrete structures.
Freight rail engineering and procurement
Halcrow provides a comprehensive range of rail expertise to support resources transportation. We assist with regulatory documentation, locomotive and rolling stock design and assessments, operations planning, revenue predictions, modelling and timetabling, site assessments and permanent way designs.
Halcrow has particular expertise in procuring all types of rolling stock, from the latest AC traction locomotives to wagons and railcars. We also undertake detailed rolling stock condition assessments and failure investigations.
Halcrow can identify constraints in planned and existing operations, and propose practical operational solutions.
Our proprietary fuel consumption modelling software, RAMESES, has assisted our clients to greatly reduce costs in long haul freight.
With years of experience in railway infrastructure projects, we can help clients overhaul their present infrastructure, from small reviews of siding layouts, through to designs of new bridges for railway rebuilding projects.
Material and asset engineering
Halcrow has extensive experience in materials specification, including shotcrete mix design and testing services for fibre reinforced shotcrete. We also provide materials testing, including investigations and advice for concrete, steel and polymers.
Effective testing of rock bolts is achieved using Halcrow’s unique Ground Anchorage Integrity Testing system (GRANIT™) non-destructive testing system.
Water engineering and management
Our experienced water engineers and scientists provide mine water management, environmental compliance assessment, numerical modelling, pumping systems and pipeline design. We review CapEx and OpEx programmes, adequacy and appropriateness.
Other services include we provide to the mining sector in water include flood inundation modelling and mapping, groundwater modelling for design and monitoring purposes.
Port operations and development for resources transport
Halcrow has substantial international experience in port master plans and capacity analysis. We can provide design of wharves and marine structures, condition assessments and detailed modelling of mixed transport modes.
Sustainability for the mining industry
Our sustainability team provides strategy development and review as well as climate change and energy management. We can assist with program and project evaluation and principles, concepts and approaches.
Risk management for the mining industry
Our substantial rail risk and safety team can review and develop safety procedures to suit a diverse range of operating environments. Halcrow has the expertise to assess and advise on mine development and project risk, including catastrophic risk management.
We can also assist with corporate and regulatory requirements, approvals and consultation. Other areas of risk assessment relate to water auditing and mine water management and our specialists have provided support in due diligence for acquisitions and mergers.
