Yale Cordage is a custom and specialty rope manufacturer that designs application-specific ropes: winchlines, stringing lines and blocklines for utilities; fiber optic pulling lines for telephone construction; bull ropes and climbing lines for arborists; safety lanyards and lifting slings for industrial applications, and ropes for marine applications – from hawsers for mooring commercial tankers, to halyards for sailing dinghies.

Yale also designs and manufactures custom rope for specialty applications such as mining, oceanographic arrays and faired electromechanical cables.

Synthetic mining ropes

Yale Cordage has a long history of finding solutions and developing industry-changing solutions. For decades the mining industry, specifically the underground mining industry, had been relying on wire. This wire was prone to damage such as corrosion. In addition, the wire could develop fish hooks and kinks, creating an unsafe working environment for miners.

The mining industry presented a challenge to create a safe, strong rope, and Yale delivered. Our lines of synthetic mining ropes are a better alternative to traditional wire cable. They’re stronger, safer and lighter. Our industry-leading engineers also added a reflective technology that makes them easier to see. For 60 years industries have challenged us to make better ropes and we’ve always been up to the challenge.

Cat's Eye™ Ultrex™ is a specially designed rope for underground mining. It retains the high strength of Ultrex™ and adds a reflective component making it ideal for underground mining.
Ultrex is a 12-strand single braid of 100% Spectra® ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMPE) fiber enhanced with Yale's Maxijacket HP coating, which gives it superior abrasion resistance.
Unitrex XS Max Wear is a parallel core rope of Honeywell's Spectra, wrapped with a Neoprene tape and over braided with a tough jacket of high tenacity polyester.

High-strength rope for underground mining

Cat’s Eye™ Ultrex™ is a specially designed product for underground mining. This rope keeps the high strength of Ultrex and adds a reflective component to allow it to be seen in the conditions unique to underground mining. The Spectra® fiber has been demonstrated to have better abrasion resistance and Yale’s special construction techniques maximize those characteristics.

Abrasion-resistant 12-strand rope

Ultrex is a 12-strand single braid of 100% Spectra ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMPE) fiber enhanced with Yale’s Maxijacket HP coating supplying superior abrasion resistance. Ultrex braid angles and twist level are designed to optimize break strength and keep stretch low.

UHMPE is the most forgiving high modulus fiber giving better bend over sheave cycling capabilities than other high tech fibers. Ultrex has zero water absorption and maintains its flexibility even in freezing conditions.

Wear-resistant synthetic cable

Unitrex XS Max Wear is Uniline’s high-tech cousin. It is a parallel core rope of Honeywell’s Spectra, wrapped with a Neoprene tape and over braided with a tough jacket of high tenacity polyester. The result is a synthetic cable, somewhat stiffer than your usual rope, which is much like wire in its stretch characteristics. Unlike wire it is much lighter and easily handled. Unitrex XS Max Wear has high strength retention in service, which is supported by field studies and our long-standing track record with Uniline polyester.

Unitrex’s tough rubber layer protects its high modulus Spectra core and the outer jacket is saturated with Urethane making it the toughest UHMPE rope you can buy. All Yale Cordage parallel core ropes are torque free, with bonded cores preventing contamination of the internal strength member. Unitrex XS can be quickly terminated and/or joined with a TechEye™ or TechJoin™.

  • Synthetic Cordage Enabling Innovation in Key Energy Applications

Although HMPE fibre cordage has been available for decades, the past few years have seen a dramatic increase in its use for mission-critical, heavy-duty applications, particularly in the energy sector. High modulus polyethylene, often referred to as HMPE, has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios available; but in order to optimise that strength, the fibre's vulnerability to abrasion and UV light must first be controlled.
