The company plans to shift its declining open-pit PGM and chrome co-producing Tharisa mine to underground mining within the next decade.
The move comes after opposition from local residents and authorities, who warned that the project posed risks to the Quimsacocha water reserve.
The mining operations began with overburden stripping and the extraction of initial ore.
Peabody retracted its offer of almost $3.8bn (£2.83bn) for Anglo American's Australian coking coal assets in August.
The drilling programme aims to evaluate two primary targets, Copeçal East and Copeçal West.
