Australian telecommunications and media company Telstra has secured a $23m contract with mining and construction equipment manufacturer Komatsu to aid its ICT and machine-to-machine (M2M) strategy.
Under the three-year agreement, Telstra will also provide Komatsu with core telecommunications including voice, data and mobile, in addition to strategic ICT services that include M2M and agile cloud technologies.

Komatsu Australia managing director and CEO Sean Taylor said: "We’re committed to business innovation and staying one step ahead of our customer’s needs, and it’s only through relationships with key partners like Telstra that this is possible."
Komatsu is expected to build on a recent trial of M2M connectivity as part of the deal, which enabled a ‘zero touch’ remote download of performance diagnostic data from over 700 pieces of its equipment on various mine sites.
As the data can be accessed from the Komatsu inSite Centre in Fairfield, Sydney, it eliminates the requirement to remove equipment from use when the data is downloaded.
This also results in improved fleet and production efficiency for the customers of Komatsu.

By GlobalDataBy implementing Telstra Cloud services, Komatsu could shift its infrastructure hosting into Telstra’s first-evolution cloud platform in 2010.
According to Telstra, the new solution will include a private Cloud with domestic integration into Microsoft Azure for storage and additional workload deployments enabling Komatsu to improve its disaster recovery capability with automated services.
Komatsu CIO Ian Harvison said: "From the beginning of our cloud journey with Telstra, the focus has been on giving more time back to the business so we can innovate and adapt, and not worry about IT.
"This new agreement will be an extension of our collaborative relationship and will ensure we continue to lead our category within the mining sector."
