Mining major Rio Tinto has signed a global agreement with Active Navigation to triage and support the management of its unstructured digital data.

The latest file analysis software from Active Navigation will help the mining company lower its storage costs while bolstering its overall information governance across the company.

Rio Tinto global business services head Scott Singer said: "We generate a huge volume of unstructured data and growth rates are expanding significantly.

"Our early trials with Active Navigation identified that approximately 40% of our data was eligible for defensible destruction. We are now incorporating Active Navigation software as a primary mechanism for file analysis and disposition."

The software will also enable Rio Tinto to identify and action data that is to be kept on live networks.

According to Active Navigation, the software is based around the company’s integrated suite of tools supported by its proven methodology and ensures integrity around the data that is to be kept, stored or deleted.

Sensitive data can also be identified using the software and classification structures, including metadata augmentation, which can be developed and used as part of a migration to content management applications such as Microsoft’s SharePoint.

Active Navigation CEO Peter Baumann said: "Rio Tinto have recognised that as they move more data into the cloud, the most cost-effective and efficient way to do that is to only keep and move what is required.

"Our proprietary software and managed services solution is ideal for this and sets the foundation for a future of strong information governance across Rio Tinto’s unstructured data worldwide."
