Orbite Aluminae has selected Outotec to deliver a 3t per day calciner system, which will be installed at its high purity alumina (HPA) production facility at Cap-Chat in Québec, Canada.

Earlier this year, Orbite started a design review and detailed engineering with Seneca, as well as project management and control activities with Groupe Alphard.

The company said it continues to work towards a 12 month execution timeline, with hot and cold commissioning scheduled to take place in December.

Commercial operations are anticipated to start in January 2015, with full production capacity of 3t per day anticipated by the first quarter of 2015.

"We are on schedule and are progressing well towards our 12 month execution timeline."

Orbite Aluminae CEO Glenn Kelly said that various project elements, such as the design review, have now been completed.

Additionally, following positive calcination and decomposition testing results with potential suppliers in Asia and Europe, we have been able to conclude negotiations and selected Outotec to deliver the new calcination system," Kelly said.

Orbite said operating conditions for the HPA purification steps were optimised via a series of tests at its technology development centre.

Prior to the Cap-Chat facility, Orbite has completed the basic engineering for a proposed smelter-grade alumina production plant, which would use clay mined from its Grande-Vallée deposit.

Orbite’s intellectual property portfolio includes 15 intellectual property families. The company owns property rights to 11 patents and 57 patent pending applications across ten countries and regions.
