Genesis Minerals has received the final regulatory approvals needed to start open-pit mining operations at its Ulysses gold project near Leonora in Western Australia.

The project management plan, as well as the deed for blasting and road closure approvals were given by the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) and the Commissioner of Main Roads Western Australia.

The upcoming exploration programmes are aimed at increasing the resource inventory at the company’s wholly owned Ulysses and identify additional low-risk open-pit mining opportunities.

Genesis Minerals managing director Michael Fowler said: “We are pleased to have teamed-up with SMS Innovative Mining as part of a mining alliance, which will allow us to generate very strong returns from mining the Ulysses West open-pit in a very short space of time.

“All approvals and preparations are now in place in readiness for the start of mining later this month.

“In parallel with these activities, we have also been preparing for two pivotal drilling programmes, both scheduled to commence in October.”

The company plans to drill below the existing open-pit at Ulysses in order to identify potential additions to the existing resource inventory.

Genesis already obtained all other approvals and licences, including the DMP mining proposal, mine closure plan, DMP clearing permit and a groundwater abstraction licence.

Separately, the company signed a toll milling agreement with Paddington Gold and a mining alliance with contractor SMS Innovative Mining.

Site mobilisation at Ulysses is set to begin soon, while planned mobilisation and start of mining activities at Ulysses West are set to start at the end of this month.

During mid-October, the first ore is planned to be dispatched to the Paddington mill under the toll milling agreement. Open-pit mining at Ulysses West is slated for completion in December this year.
