Fortescue Metals has selected Ecologia Environmental Consultants (Ecologia) to conduct an assessment of the biodiversity value of a selection of Pilbara wetlands in Western Australia.

The assessment is part of Fortescue’s Pilbara iron ore and infrastructure project and involves a series of iron ore mines in the Pilbara region.

Ecologia said it will use a combination of desktop and field assessments for the project.

Under the contract, Ecologia will provide an understanding of the relative ecological values and significance of wetlands within the project area.

“We will provide our clients with a practical tool that can be used for evaluating the wetlands using invertebrate species as bio indicators.”

The consultant will identify biological and physical attributes of the wetland macro-invertebrate communities.

Ecologia general manager Lazaro Roque-Albelo said the company will do a complete assessment of the region’s biodiversity values.

“Within this assessment we will provide our clients with a practical tool that can be used for evaluating the wetlands using invertebrate species as bio indicators,” Roque-Albelo said.

“This project adds to our increasing portfolio of work that we have carried out for Fortescue. We are pleased to be continuing to work with them on their Pilbara based projects.”

Earlier this month, Ecologia secured a three-year contract from Fortescue Metals to monitor the Pilbara Olive Python.

Fortescue requires three years of annual monitoring of the Pilbara Olive Python at their Christmas Creek operations, to comply with relevant approvals and management plans.

Ecologia has recently conducted the same Pilbara Olive Python monitoring programme at Fortescue’s Solomon mine and mainline rail project areas.
