British mining company Kodal Minerals has received an export permit for the spodumene concentrate produced at its Bougouni lithium project in southern Mali.
The permit, authorised by the Ministry of Mines and signed by Professor Amadou Keita, the Minister of Mines, allows the export of an initial 125,000 tonnes (t) of lithium concentrate, with further administrative steps pending for the export process.

The Bougouni project is operated by Les Mines de Lithium de Bougouni (LMLB), a subsidiary of Kodal Mining UK. Kodal holds a 49% shareholding in LMLB.
In May, Kodal Minerals’ CEO, Bernard Aylward, revealed that the company was unable to export more than 20,000t of concentrate from the Bougouni project due to regulatory challenges.
The export permit outlines several key points including the confirmation of the pricing mechanism based on the Shanghai Metal Market reference price and the requirement for transportation contracts to be granted to Malian companies, in line with local mining sector laws.
Additionally, it stipulates the payment of all relevant taxes, duties and levies as regulated.

By GlobalDataAylward said: “The granting of the export licence is a critical step for the development of the Bougouni project as well as Mali’s burgeoning spodumene industry.
“The permit further underpins the continued support of the Mali Ministry of Mines and the Government and their interest in the further development and expansion of Bougouni. Final administrative processes will be completed imminently and the mobilisation of the trucking fleet to site will commence as soon as possible.”
Kodal has already finalised an offtake agreement for the project.
Moreover, a transport contract has been signed with a Malian company for the shipment of the material from the site to the port in Côte d’Ivoire.
Kodal Minerals also confirmed that all financial obligations including taxes, duties and levies will be fulfilled in accordance with the agreement and applicable laws.
