Ecuador’s Azuay province is reportedly witnessing strong opposition against Canadian operator Dundee Precious Metals’ (DPM) Loma Larga gold mining project.

Tens of thousands of residents and local leaders have protested, demanding the suspension of the project, which they claim threatens a critical water reserve, reported Reuters.

The government had granted an environmental licence for construction, but mounting pressure led to a temporary suspension.

Provincial authorities argue that the project will impact the 3,200 hectare (ha) Quimsacocha reserve and surrounding areas.

These highland moors are essential for supplying drinking water to major cities. An estimated 90,000 people marched in Cuenca, with Mayor Cristian Zamora stating: “We want the national government to revoke the environmental licence. The streets of Cuenca are roaring… and they will have to listen to us.”

DPM Metals has declined to comment on the protests and demands.

Ecuador has significant gold and copper reserves, yet only two mines are currently operational, owned by Canada’s Lundin Gold and a Chinese consortium, EcuaCorriente.

President Daniel Noboa has distanced himself from the project, stating that local authorities must take responsibility for future actions.

In a radio interview, Noboa remarked: “The municipality and prefecture must take responsibility,” adding that if DPM Metals pursues arbitration, it will be the company’s decision.

He noted: “There is a very high probability (the project will not go ahead), but there is also a probability that there will be problems in the future.”

Community opposition, environmental concerns and legal uncertainties have hindered mining project developments in Ecuador. In Azuay, residents have previously rejected mining initiatives through votes and court rulings.
