World’s ten largest diamond mines in 2021

Here are the ten largest diamond mines by production across the world in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Jwaneng Mine

The Jwaneng Mine is a surface mine situated in Kgalagadi District, Botswana. Owned by Government of Botswana, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 18.6 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2036.

2. Kao Mine

Located in Butha-Buthe, Lesotho, the Kao Mine is owned by Namakwa Diamonds. The surface mine produced an estimated 13.4 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2034.

3. Orapa Mine

The Orapa Mine is a surface mine located in Central District, Botswana. Owned by Government of Botswana, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 10.6 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2036.

4. Catoca Mine

Owned by ALRO, the Catoca Mine is a surface mine situated in Lunda Sul, Angola. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 6.9 million carats of diamond in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2037.

5. Gahcho Kue Project

The Gahcho Kue Project is a surface mine situated in Northwest Territories, Canada. Owned by Mountain Province Diamonds, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 6.4 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine is expected to operate until 2030.

6. Diavik Mine

The Diavik Mine is an underground mine situated in Northwest Territories, Canada. Owned by Rio Tinto, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 5.9 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2025.

7. Venetia Mine

Located in Limpopo, South Africa, the Venetia Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc. The surface and underground mine produced an estimated 5.3 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2045.

8. Jubilee Mine

The Jubilee Mine is a surface mine located in Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, Russia. Owned by ALRO, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 5.2 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine will operate until 2030.

9. Botuobinskaya Mine

Owned by ALRO, the Botuobinskaya Mine is a surface mine situated in Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, Russia. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 4.7 million carats of diamond in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2039.

10. Udachny Mine

The Udachny Mine is an underground mine situated in Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, Russia. Owned by ALRO, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 4.4 million carats of diamond in 2021. The mine is expected to operate until 2037.
