World’s ten largest coal mines in 2021

Here are the ten largest coal mines by production across the world in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. North Antelope Rochelle Mine

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is a surface mine situated in Wyoming, United States. Owned by Peabody Energy, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 57 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The mine will operate until 2047.

2. Black Thunder Mine

Located in Wyoming, United States, the Black Thunder Mine is owned by Arch Resources. The surface mine produced an estimated 51.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

3. Sangatta Mine

The Sangatta Mine is a surface mine located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Owned by Bumi Resources, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 49.2 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

4. Gevra OC Mine

Owned by Coal India, the Gevra OC Mine is a surface mine situated in Chhattisgarh, India. The brownfield mine produced an estimated 47.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2028.

5. Bogatyr Komir Mine

The Bogatyr Komir Mine is a surface mine situated in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Owned by Samruk-Energy, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 44.6 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Northern Shaanxi Mine

The Northern Shaanxi Mine is a surface and underground mine situated in Shaanxi, China. Owned by Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 35.8 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

7. Pasir Mine

Located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Pasir Mine is owned by Indika Energy. The surface mine produced an estimated 35.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

8. Heidaigou Mine

The Heidaigou Mine is a surface mine located in Inner Mongolia, China. Owned by China Shenhua Energy, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 32.3 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The mine will operate until 2030.

9. Tutupan Mine

Owned by Adaro Energy, the Tutupan Mine is a surface mine situated in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The brownfield mine produced an estimated 31.8 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

10. Belchatow Mine

The Belchatow Mine is a surface mine situated in Lodz, Poland. Owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 31.5 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The mine is expected to operate until 2040.
