Ten biggest producing underground mines in the Middle East and Africa in 2021

Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in the Middle East and Africa in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Rustenburg Complex

The Rustenburg Complex is a platinum mining project in North West, South Africa. The brownfield project is owned by Sibanye Stillwater and is due to operate until 2052. The mine produced an estimated 12.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 383.4 thousand ounces of platinum in 2021.

2. Syferfontein Mine

The Syferfontein Mine is a coal mine owned by Sasol. Located in Gauteng, South Africa, the greenfield mine produced approximately 9.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 9.3 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

3. Black Mountain Mine

Located in Northern Cape, South Africa, the Black Mountain Mine is a lead mining project owned by Vedanta Resources. The mine is expected to operate until 2023.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 8.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 40 thousand tonnes of lead in the same year.

4. Khutala Mine

The Khutala Mine is a coal mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa. Owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty, the brownfield project produced an estimated 8.8Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 6.5 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The Khutala Mine will operate until 2033.

5. Impala Mine

Owned by Impala Platinum Holdings, the Impala Mine is a gold mine situated in North West, South Africa. The mine is expected to operate until 2035.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 8.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 263.5 thousand ounces of gold in 2021.

6. Twistdraai Mine

The Twistdraai Mine is a coal mining project in Mpumalanga , South Africa. The greenfield project is owned by Sasol and is due to operate until 2043. The mine produced an estimated 8.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5.5 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

7. Kroondal Mine

The Kroondal Mine is a platinum mine owned by Sibanye Stillwater. Located in North West, South Africa, the greenfield mine produced approximately 7.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 282.8 thousand ounces of platinum in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2032.

8. Kimberley Mines

Located in Northern Cape, South Africa, the Kimberley Mines is a diamond mining project owned by Ekapa Mining. The mine is expected to operate until 2029.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 7.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 1.1 million carats of diamond in the same year.

9. Amandelbult Mine

The Amandelbult Mine is a platinum mine located in Limpopo, South Africa. Owned by Anglo American Plc, the greenfield project produced an estimated 7.3Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 410.9 thousand ounces of platinum in 2021. The Amandelbult Mine will operate until 2040.

10. Zimplats Mine

Owned by Impala Platinum Holdings, the Zimplats Mine is a platinum mine situated in Mashonaland West, Zimbabwe. The mine is expected to operate until 2059.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 7.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 266 thousand ounces of platinum in 2021.
