Ten biggest producing underground mines in Oceania in 2021

Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in Oceania in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Cadia Mine

The Cadia Mine is a gold mining project in New South Wales, Australia. The brownfield project is owned by Newcrest Mining and is due to operate until 2047. The mine produced an estimated 32.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 764.9 thousand ounces of gold in 2021.

2. Olympic Dam Mine

The Olympic Dam Mine is a copper mine owned by BHP. Located in South Australia, Australia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 8.7Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 205.3 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2061.

3. Kestrel Mine

Located in Queensland, Australia, the Kestrel Mine is a coal mining project owned by EMR Capital Group. The mine is expected to operate until 2054.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 7.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5.3 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

4. Ulan West Mine

The Ulan West Mine is a coal mine located in New South Wales, Australia. Owned by Glencore Plc, the brownfield project produced an estimated 6.9Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 6.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The Ulan West Mine will operate until 2032.

5. Broadmeadow Mine

Owned by BHP, the Broadmeadow Mine is a coal mine situated in Queensland, Australia. The mine is expected to operate until 2056.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 6.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Ernest Henry Mine

The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper mining project in Queensland, Australia. The greenfield project is owned by Evolution Mining and is due to operate until 2026. The mine produced an estimated 6.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 19.2 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021.

7. Moranbah North Mine

The Moranbah North Mine is a coal mine owned by Anglo American Plc. Located in Queensland, Australia, the brownfield mine produced approximately 5.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 4.4 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2039.

8. Ulan Coal Underground Mine

Located in New South Wales, Australia, the Ulan Coal Underground Mine is a coal mining project owned by Glencore Plc. The mine is expected to operate until 2030.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 5.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5.6 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

9. Mount Isa Copper Mine

The Mount Isa Copper Mine is a copper mine located in Queensland, Australia. Owned by Glencore Plc, the brownfield project produced an estimated 5.7Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 91.5 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The Mount Isa Copper Mine will operate until 2023.

10. Grasstree Mine

Owned by Anglo American Plc, the Grasstree Mine is a coal mine situated in Queensland, Australia. The mine is expected to operate until 2028.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 5.4Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 3.8 million tonnes of coal in 2021.
