Ten biggest producing underground mines in North America in 2021

Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in North America in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Rocanville Mine

The Rocanville Mine is a potash mining project in Saskatchewan, Canada. The brownfield project is owned by Nutrien and is due to operate until 2051. The mine produced an estimated 16.6Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5 million tonnes of potash in 2021.

2. MC#1 Mine

The MC#1 Mine is a coal mine owned by ACNR Holdings. Located in Illinois, United States, the greenfield mine produced approximately 16.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 7.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

3. Sugar Creek Mine

Located in Missouri, United States, the Sugar Creek Mine is a limestone mining project owned by Eagle Materials.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 16Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 14.4 million tonnes of limestone in the same year.

4. Bailey Mine

The Bailey Mine is a coal mine located in Pennsylvania, United States. Owned by Consol Energy, the greenfield project produced an estimated 14.3Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 10.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

5. Marshall County Mine

Owned by ACNR Holdings, the Marshall County Mine is a coal mine situated in West Virginia, United States.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 14.1Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 10 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Black Otter Project

The Black Otter Project is a coal mining project in Montana, United States. The greenfield project is owned by Gunvor Group. The mine produced an estimated 13.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 10.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

7. Sugar Camp Coal Mine

The Sugar Camp Coal Mine is a coal mine owned by The Cline Group. Located in Illinois, United States, the greenfield mine produced approximately 11.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 8.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

8. River View Mine

Located in Kentucky, United States, the River View Mine is a coal mining project owned by Alliance Resource Partners.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 11.4Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 8.9 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

9. Lanigan Mine

The Lanigan Mine is a potash mine located in Saskatchewan, Canada. Owned by Nutrien, the greenfield project produced an estimated 9.2Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 2.9 million tonnes of potash in 2021. The Lanigan Mine will operate until 2098.

10. Hillsboro Mine

Owned by The Cline Group, the Hillsboro Mine is a coal mine situated in Illinois, United States.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 8.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 6.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.
