Ten biggest producing underground mines in Europe in 2021

Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in Europe in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Kiruna Mine

The Kiruna Mine is an iron ore mining project in Norrbotten, Sweden. The brownfield project is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara and is due to operate until 2035. The mine produced an estimated 26.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 14.4 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.

2. Malmberget Mine

The Malmberget Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara. Located in Norrbotten, Sweden, the brownfield mine produced approximately 15.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 9.4 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2035.

3. Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine

Located in Hesse, Germany, the Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine is a potash mining project owned by K+S. The mine is expected to operate until 2055.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 14.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 1.1 million tonnes of potash in the same year.

4. Bogdanka Mine

The Bogdanka Mine is a coal mine located in Lublin, Poland. Owned by Enea, the brownfield project produced an estimated 14.2Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 10 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The Bogdanka Mine will operate until 2034.

5. Soma Mine

Owned by Turkiye Komur Isletmeleri Kurumu, the Soma Mine is a coal mine situated in Manisa, Turkey.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 12.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 8.2 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Polkowice-Sieroszowice Mine

The Polkowice-Sieroszowice Mine is a copper mining project in Lower Silesian, Poland. The greenfield project is owned by KGHM Polska Miedz and is due to operate until 2057. The mine produced an estimated 12.1Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 198.4 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021.

7. Rudna Mine

The Rudna Mine is a copper mine owned by KGHM Polska Miedz. Located in Lower Silesian, Poland, the brownfield mine produced approximately 11.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 187.6 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2042.

8. Zielitz Mine

Located in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the Zielitz Mine is a potash mining project owned by K+S. The mine is expected to operate until 2053.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 11.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 1.3 million tonnes of potash in the same year.

9. Lubin Mine

The Lubin Mine is a copper mine located in Silesian, Poland. Owned by KGHM Polska Miedz, the brownfield project produced an estimated 7.4Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 70.2 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The Lubin Mine will operate until 2047.

10. TavSanli Mine

Owned by Turkiye Komur Isletmeleri Kurumu, the TavSanli Mine is a coal mine situated in Kutahya, Turkey.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 6.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 3.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.
