Ten biggest producing surface mines in Oceania in 2021

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in Oceania in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Mount Whaleback Mine

The Mount Whaleback Mine is an iron ore mining project in Western Australia, Australia. The greenfield project is owned by BHP and is due to operate until 2036. The mine produced an estimated 88.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 74.4 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.

2. Christmas Creek Mine

The Christmas Creek Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Fortescue Metals Group . Located in Western Australia, Australia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 67.8Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 54.4 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2031.

3. Jimblebar Hub

Located in Western Australia, Australia, the Jimblebar Hub is an iron ore mining project owned by BHP. The mine is expected to operate until 2060.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 67.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 67.4 million tonnes of iron ore in the same year.

The Area C Mine is an iron ore mine owned by BHP. Located in Western Australia, Australia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 59Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 61.6 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2027.

8. Brockman 4 Mine

Located in Western Australia, Australia, the Brockman 4 Mine is an iron ore mining project owned by Rio Tinto . The mine is expected to operate until 2027.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 58.7Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 51.8 million tonnes of iron ore in the same year.

9. Hope Downs Mine

The Hope Downs Mine is an iron ore mine located in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by Hancock Prospecting Pty, the greenfield project produced an estimated 55.8Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 49.3 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The Hope Downs Mine will operate until 2031.
