Ten biggest producing surface mines in Asia-Pacific in 2021

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in Asia-Pacific in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Green Mine

The Green Mine is a phosphate mining project in Sichuan, China. The greenfield project is owned by Sichuan Lomon. The mine produced an estimated 62.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 37.3 million tonnes of phosphate in 2021.

2. Sangatta Mine

The Sangatta Mine is a coal mine owned by Bumi Resources. Located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 51.4Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 49.2 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

3. Gevra OC Mine

Located in Chhattisgarh, India, the Gevra OC Mine is a coal mining project owned by Coal India. The mine is expected to operate until 2028.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 49Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 47.1 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

4. Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine

The Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine is a copper mine located in Omnogovi, Mongolia. Owned by Government of Mongolia, the greenfield project produced an estimated 43.1Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 163 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine will operate until 2051.

5. Heidaigou Mine

Owned by China Shenhua Energy, the Heidaigou Mine is a coal mine situated in Inner Mongolia, China. The mine is expected to operate until 2030.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 40.1Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 32.3 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Letpadaung Copper Mine

The Letpadaung Copper Mine is a copper mining project in Sagaing, Myanmar. The greenfield project is owned by Wanbao Mining and is due to operate until 2050. The mine produced an estimated 36.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 123 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021.

7. Pasir Mine

The Pasir Mine is a coal mine owned by Indika Energy. Located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the brownfield mine produced approximately 35.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 35.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

8. Haerwusu Mine

Located in Inner Mongolia, China, the Haerwusu Mine is a coal mining project owned by China Shenhua Energy. The mine is expected to operate until 2087.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 33.6Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 23.8 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

9. Kusan Mine

The Kusan Mine is a coal mine located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Owned by Dian Swastatika Sentosa, the greenfield project produced an estimated 33.1Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 4.6 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

10. FTB Project

Owned by Bayan Resources, the FTB Project is a coal mine situated in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The mine is expected to operate until 2055.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 31.1Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 30.9 million tonnes of coal in 2021.
