Ten biggest producing surface and underground mines in Europe in 2021

Here are the ten largest surface and underground mining projects by production in Europe in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine

The Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine is an iron ore mining project in Nordland, Norway. The brownfield project is owned by Leonhard Nilsen & Sonner and is due to operate until 2023. The mine produced an estimated 6.7Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 1.4 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.

2. Sorgun Lignite Field Mine

The Sorgun Lignite Field Mine is a coal mine owned by Karma Madencilik Insaat Sanayi ve Tic.. Located in Yozgat, Turkey, the greenfield mine produced approximately 6.7Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 5.1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

3. Jilt Mine

Located in Gorj, Romania, the Jilt Mine is a coal mining project owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia .

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 5.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 3.9 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

4. CSA Mine

The CSA Mine is a coal mine located in Moravian-Silesian, Czech Republic. Owned by Czech Coal , the greenfield project produced an estimated 4.5Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 3.4 million tonnes of coal in 2021. The CSA Mine will operate until 2022.

5. Tuncbilek Mine

Owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises, the Tuncbilek Mine is a coal mine situated in Kutahya, Turkey.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 3.6Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 2.7 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

6. Skouriotissa Mine

The Skouriotissa Mine is a copper mining project in Nicosia, Cyprus. The brownfield project is owned by Hellenic Copper Mines . The mine produced an estimated 2.5Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 4,517 tonnes of copper in 2021.

7. Artvin Murgul Mine

The Artvin Murgul Mine is a copper mine owned by Cengiz Holding . Located in Artvin, Turkey, the brownfield mine produced approximately 2.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 41.3 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021.

8. Boliden Area Mines

Located in Vasterbotten, Sweden, the Boliden Area Mines is a gold mining project owned by Boliden . The mine is expected to operate until 2028.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 92 thousand ounces of gold in the same year.

9. Banovici Mine

The Banovici Mine is a coal mine located in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Owned by Government of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the greenfield project produced an estimated 1.5Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 1.2 million tonnes of coal in 2021.

10. Kakanj Coal Mine

Owned by JP Elektroprivreda BiH, the Kakanj Coal Mine is a coal mine situated in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 1.4Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 1 million tonnes of coal in 2021.
