One person has died and two have been injured after a roof collapsed at a coal mine in West Virginia, US.

Marshall County emergency management director Tom Hart said that the incident took place at the Marshall County Coal Mine.

The cause of the roof collapse has not yet been determined.

"Inspectors are on-site. There’s no other information at this time."

State and federal mine officials are set to work with the owner of the mine portal to determine the cause of the accident.

Murray Energy owns the coal mine.

West Virginia Office of Miner’s Health Safety and Training said: "We have received notification of an incident at the McElroy Mine in Marshall County. Inspectors are on-site. There’s no other information at this time.

In a brief statement Murray Energy said ‘an accident’ had occurred at the company’s Marshall County mine.

Murray Energy and its subsidiary companies operate at least 12 active coal mines in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Utah and Illinois, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
