Five largest nickel mines in South Africa in 2021

Here are the five largest nickel mines by production in South Africa, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Mogalakwena Mine

The Mogalakwena Mine is a surface mine located in Limpopo. It is owned by Anglo American Plc and produced an estimated 15,449 Tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2040.

2. Nkomati Mine

Located in Mpumalanga , the Nkomati Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals. The surface mine produced an estimated 8,016 Tonnes of nickel in 2021.

3. Union Mine

The Union Mine is located in Limpopo. It is owned by Siyanda Resources (Proprietary) and produced an estimated 4,600 Tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2033.

4. Impala Mine

The Impala Mine, owned by Impala Platinum Holdings, is an underground mine located in North West. The mine produced an estimated 3,945 Tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2035.

5. Thembelani Mine

Owned by Sibanye Stillwater, the Thembelani Mine is a surface and underground mine located in North West. It produced an estimated 3,858 Tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2039.
