The global mining industry noticed a 5.2% rise in IT hiring activity in June 2021 over the previous month, led by Polyus’s 9.51% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The mining industry’s overall hiring activity declined 1.97% when compared with May 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.44% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in June 2021, up 0.29% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of June 2021 were 3.79% higher compared with the previous month.

The increase was a result of 5.14% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive mining IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 41.85% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in June 2021, a 9.22% an increase over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 17.39% in June 2021, up 36.17% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer Support Specialists with a 14.4% share in June 2021, an increase of 140.91% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 12.5% share in June 2021 and drop of 23.33% over May 2021.

Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in June 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average an increase of 92% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during June 2021 over May 2021.

Polyus posted 35 IT jobs in June 2021 and registered a rise of 218.18% over the previous month, followed by Glencore with 32 jobs and an 88.24% rise. Gold Fields with 31 IT jobs and ThyssenKrupp with 24 jobs, recorded a 121.43% an increase and a 27.27% drop, respectively, while Hill & Smith recorded a flat growth with 22 job postings during June 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry

Asia-Pacific emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in June 2021 with a 36.96% share, which marked a 97.1% growth over the previous month.

North America stood next with 29.62%, registering a 6.84% month-on-month decline.Europe was the third leading region with a 26.36% share and a 7.78% rise over May 2021.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 3.53% and a month-on-month drop of 40.91%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 3.53%, registering a 160% an increase over the previous month.
