Australia’s Aura Energy has secured approval for the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) of the Tiris uranium project in Mauritania.

Approval by the Mauritanian Government comes after the company submitted the mining lease application for the project in May.

As part of the approval process, ministerial and public consultations were conducted to assess the impact of the development of the project.

Aura Energy executive chairman Peter Reeve said: “For a uranium project, one of the most important steps in its path to development is the environmental approval step.

“Achieving this milestone for Aura’s Tiris uranium project on schedule and with the strong support of the Mauritanian Government is another solid step forward for Aura to production and cashflow.

Under the environmental approval, all mining and processing activities, including the finalising of all the necessary plans for radiation management are covered.

Under the approval, the company needs to set up a radiation monitoring system under the supervision of the National Radiation Protection, Nuclear Safety and Security Authority (ARSN).

In addition, the company has to submit a quarterly report on the state of implementation of the environmental and social management plan.

The project has 49 million pounds of U3O8 in current resources from 66 million tonnes at 334ppm U3O8.

Based on a scoping study, the project can produce 11 million pounds of uranium over an initial mine-life of 15 years.
