The 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for the last two months could be rescued in the second half of this month, Chile’s Mining Minister Laurence Golborne has announced.

The miners have been trapped below 2,300ft since 5 August following a cave-in.

“The eventual rescue could come in the second half of October,” said Golborne.

Metal cages designed by the Chilean Navy will be used to rescue the miners and bring them to the surface all at once.
