Zijin Mining has halted production at its Yinyan tin mine in southern Guangdong province, China, after a break in the mine’s residue pool flooded nearby villages, killing four people.

Last week the mine suffered a sharp increase in water levels due to torrential rain resulting in a break in the right side of the initial dam of the Kaoqiling tailing pool.

The break has also damaged houses, farmland and water facilities downstream, Zijin said.

The company will lose $2.84m due to the shutdown of the mine, which was operating on trial production basis, Zijin said in a statement.
