Five miners have died at the Marikana mine in South Africa due to a ground fall on 6 July, mine operator Aquarius Platinum said.

A sixth person has been hospitalised but is not in a life-threatening condition, the company said in a statement.

Operations at the mine have been suspended.

The company said an investigation into the cause of the accident will start today.

Marikana, a joint venture been Aquarius and Anglo Platinum, produced 157,937oz of platinum group metals in the last financial year.
