Rio Tinto has opened an operations centre in Perth, Australia, to ensure smooth functions and maximise efficiency in its Pilbara mining units.

A key part of Rio Tinto’s vision for the ‘Mine of the Future’, the centre will be a hub for its network of mines, rail systems, infrastructure facilities and port operations in the Pilbara.

Driverless trucks, remotely operated drill and blasting, automated train systems and remote train loading functions will make up some of the centre’s functions, Rio said.

Rio said the centre is fundamental to its vision of the Pilbara as a single, integrated ‘one mine’ logistics system.

Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh said the centre will help the company operate its Pilbara iron ore operations above capacity, redefining the limits of what was considered possible.
