Officials have said the death toll could be as high as 70 following an explosion in a coal mine in Colombia on Wednesday.

18 miners have already been confirmed dead, and many are still trapped inside the mine, near the town of Amagá.

It is thought that a build-up of methane gas is behind the explosion in the privately owned mine, which it is believed did not have gas detectors or chimneys installed.

Miners died at the same mine in 2008 when the mine flooded.

Officials say they do not expect to find many of the trapped miners alive.
