Australia’s MMG Century Mine has been fined by a magistrates’ court for causing serious environmental damage to Page Creek near Mt Isa in Queensland.
Queensland Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said the company pleaded guilty to discharging contaminated wastewater from its zinc and lead mine about 250km north-west of Mount Isa, during heavy rainfall in 2009.
The company was fined $130,000 and has been ordered to pay costs of more than $8,000 in damages.
Jones said the contaminants released into the waterways included cadmium, zinc and dissolved sulphate.
MMG owns and operates the Century mine, which is situated within an area of significant environmental value including the Gregory Wild Rivers area near Boodjamulla National Park.
