Nuclear power company Areva said it has signed an agreement with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) to mine uranium resources in Central Jordan.

The mining agreement grants Areva the right to mine the deposits for 25 years.

Areva and JAEC had started exploration activities a year ago. Under the new contract, they will continue searching for uranium and carry out a feasibility study covering environmental, economical and technical aspects of the project before production starts.

A portion of the uranium produced by the future mine will contribute in the development of the Kingdom’s nuclear power generation programme.
