Newmont Mining’s Indonesian unit PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) halted operations at its Batu Hijau copper and gold mine in Eastern Indonesia’s Sumbawa Island following an accident that killed a dozer operator on Sunday.

A miner was killed on 17 January while operating a rubber-tire dozer when a rock-slide occurred in the mine.

Investigations are in progress and government mine regulators and Batu Hijau management and staff are working together to ascertain the cause of the accident to ensure such incidents do not occur in future.

Mine operations at the pit have been suspended pending investigations by Indonesia’s Department of Energy and Mineral Resources and PTNNT.

PTNNT will continue to process ore from stockpiles at the mine.

The company has not said when it will restart operations at the mine and the exact impact on production.
