A blast at a coal mine in Mustafakemalpasa town in the north-west province of Bursa, Turkey, triggered a collapse in the underground chamber, killing 19 miners.

Labour minister Omer Dincer said all the workers died as they were buried roughly 720ft under the surface due to the explosion and subsequent collapse.

All of the bodies have been recovered.

The coal mine has been closed for six months following the collapse, which happened on 10 December.

The blast occurred due to the use of dynamite during digging work underground, where a large concentration of methane gas had leaked.

Investigations are currently in progress, and the mine’s general manager and two employees have been arrested and detained for further questioning.
