A flood at Zhonghe coal mine near Meihekou City, in China’s Jilin province, trapped 16 miners last week, according to China’s State Administration of Work Safety.

One worker has been rescued from the flood, which occurred on 27 November, while 16 others were still missing at the time of the report.

The Xinhua news agency said water and mud inside the privately-owned coal mine were hindering rescue efforts.

Last month 108 minders died in a coal mine in Hegang City in the north east after an explosion trapped miners inside.
