A massive gold mine collapse in Ghana has resulted in at least 18 fatalities including 14 women.

Western Region police commander Kojo Antwi Tabi told AFP the accident is likely to be the biggest mining disaster that has ever happened in Ghana.

Tabi said it is believed 30 workers were present in the illegal, privately-owned gold mine in Ghana’s Dompoase town before it caved in, and that more dead bodies are likely to be found.

“The government must take measures to control the activities of miners,” Tabie said.
