South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers has requested the Department of Mineral Resources close a shaft in Gold Fields’ Kloof mine, located in Carletonville, following a fatality.

A miner working the night shift died after being hit by a snatch block.

Operations in the affected portion of the mine were stopped as investigations commenced.

Gold Fields spokesperson Julian Gwillim told Mining Weekly Online that the mine’s production has not been impacted by the momentary halt in operations at the affected area.

The Department of Mineral Resource is expected to finish its investigation of the mine soon and the operations in the affected area are expected to resume shortly.

The fatality increases the mining industry death toll to 145 in 2009, the labour union said.
