Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to SNC-Lavalin for the second phase of its smelter project in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Under the contract, SNC-Lavalin will provide EPCM services for the new aluminium smelter, along with a 1.7km-long potline and a power plant.

On completion, the smelter is expected to produce about 525,000t of aluminium a year, by utilising an improved version of DUBAL DX technology.

The EMAL Phase II smelter is expected to start its operations in 2014.

SNC-Lavalin has recently completed its EPCM mandate for Phase I of the EMAL smelter, which has a capacity of 750,000tpa of aluminium.
