Macmahon Holdings has received a $900m contract from a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia and Independence Group to develop the Tropicana gold project in Western Australia.

Under the ten-year contract, Macmahon will provide services such as mine planning, drill and blast, load and haul, crusher feed and other associated works.

Macmahon will also invest about $130m for mining fleet, minor equipment and infrastructure over three years, with the operation to utilise large hydraulic excavators and a fleet of 240t capacity trucks.

The company has scheduled the beginning of mining operations for July 2012.

Macmahon CEO Nick Bowen said the contract will increase the diversity of the firm’s operations and the value of its order book to a record $2.7bn.
