Indonesia is to audit over 8,000 existing mining permits, to check if they are in line with the mining and environmental laws of the country.
Last week, Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed a two-year moratorium on permits for logging and another decree allowing underground mining in protected forests if conditions such as an environmental assessment are met, reports Reuters.
Indonesia has already stopped issuing new mining permits ahead of mining regulations stemming from a 2008 law.
It is not clear where any permits will be cancelled.
