The National Union of Mineworkers has demanded a pay rise for gold and coal miners in South Africa.

The union has demanded an increase of 25% to the monthly minimum wage, and a 14% increase to basic salaries.

It also requested that the South Africa Chamber of Mines raise the living allowance by 45%.

Chamber of Mines’ industrial relations adviser Elize Strydom said, “We will approach the negotiations in a positive manner, but with a clear message that it will be incumbent on all parties to work hard towards finding a middle ground where the interests of both the workers and the mining companies are acknowledged and accommodated.”
