Israel Chemicals (ICL) is investing €160m ($231.6m) in the first stage of an expansion plan for its Iberpotash unit in Spain.

Under the first stage, ICL will expand the potash manufacturing and granulating capacity at Suria and develop a vacuum salt production plant at the site.

According to the firm, the first stage will improve the plant’s manufacturing activities in order to conform to the sustainability principles related to environmental protection.

Under the second stage, Suria’s potash manufacturing capacity will further be expanded to produce about 1.1 million tons of potash, of which 630,000 tons will be granulated potash and 50,000 tons will be technical potash.

The first stage of the plan is scheduled to be complete in early 2014.
