Anglo American is to begin a prefeasibility study on the Dona Ines de Collahuasi mine in northern Chile to investigate mine expansion and increasing copper output.
Anglo American copper business unit CEO John Mackenzie said the firm has finished the scoping study and is planning options to add either a fourth crushing line, or fourth and fifth crushing lines to the project.
The crushing line will add 110,000tpd of ore to throughput and an additional line will increase the fine copper output to 800,000tpa, reports BNamericas.
The expansion of the project is expected to be complete in 2017.
The Collahuasi mine is 44% owned by Anglo American, with Xstrata holding 44% and the remaining stake is held by Japanese consortium.
