Fluor's industrial engineering and construction joint venture (JV) with Empresas, ICA Fluor, has secured a contract for Minas de La Alta Pimeria’s Pyrite Leach project in Zacatecas, Mexico.

Minas de La Alta Pimeria is a subsidiary of Goldcorp.

Located at the Peñasquito mine, the new site will process existing zinc tailings to increase overall gold and silver recoveries prior to final deposition at the current tailings storage facility, as well as boosting the overall viability of Goldcorp’s facility.

"The approach we have developed improves this project’s overall viability."

Fluor Mining & Metals business president Rick Koumouris said: “Working hand-in-hand with Goldcorp as their strategic partner, the approach we have developed improves this project’s overall viability.”

Under the engineering, procurement and construction management contract, Fluor will serve as Goldcorp’s partner of choice for studies through an agreement.

In December last year, the project's feasibility study was completed, and the JV team has since been working with Goldcorp to prepare the project for execution.

ICA Fluor CEO Luis Zarate said: “We are honoured to keep participating in the improvement of Mexico’s industrial sector and the further development of the country.”

Approved by Goldcorp board in July, the PLP is expected to recover 40% of the gold and 48% of the silver currently in the tailings.

Commercial production from PLP is expected in the first quarter of 2019.
