Coal of Africa has stopped all construction activities at its Vele colliery in South Africa following a government order.

Environmental groups protested against a new mining right granted to the company to mine at Vele, arguing it would increase pollution at Mapungubwe, a World Heritage Site.

The Vele colliery in the northern Limpopo province has an estimated resource of 813.5 million tons of coal.
