Xstrata has posted a 73% rise in coking coal production for the first six months of 2010.

The company's coking coal output stood at 1.6 million tons due to the resumption of longwall operations at Oaky No 1 and increased productivity at Oaky North.

Ferrochrome production rose by 149% in the six months ended June 30 in response to improved market conditions, Xstrata said.

Total refined nickel production increased by 8% after all of Xstrata Nickel Australasia's feed was processed.

Xstrata's share of Collahuasi's copper production increased by 8% to 117,363t due to improved mill throughput, ore grades and metallurgical recoveries.

In the first half of 2010 the company commissioned the underground Blakefield South mine in Australia to replace Beltana, and is ramping up to reach full capacity in the third quarter of 2010.
