Police in China have detained Zijin Mining's vice-president, Chen Jiahong, following an accident at a copper-processing plant that released toxic waste.

Jiahing was the former head of Zijinshan Gold and Copper Mine, which leaked acidic wastewater from its copper-processing plant into the Ting River in south-eastern China's Fujian province.

The company has been under fire from the government since the news of the leakage was revealed.

Zijin has said it will reduce production at the mine to prevent further environmental risks.
