AngloGold Ashanti's proposed Tropicana gold mine in Western Australia has been given approval by the state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

The EPA recommend the West Australia Environment Ministry approve the opencut gold mine project located about 330km north-east of Kalgoorlie.

According to the EPA, the mine will not compromise its objectives if AngloGold implements the authority's recommended conditions relating to flora and fauna, groundwater quality, rehabilitation and mine closure.

AngloGold is expected to complete a feasibility study on the project in the December quarter of 2010.

The $700m Tropicana project is a joint venture with Independence Group, which owns a 30% stake.
