Unions at two mines owned by Peru’s Buenaventura have voted to strike over higher wages.
The mines that could be affected are the Uchucchacua silver mine and the Orcopampa gold mine located in the southern Arequipa region, reports Reuters.
The walkout depends on negotiations that union leaders will hold with company officials and the government later this week.
Last year the Orcopampa mine produced 8,549,730g of gold while the Uchucchacua mine produced 286,039kg of silver.
Peru is a leading miner of gold, silver and copper, with mineral exports accounting for around 60% of the country’s total exports.
