Whitehaven Coal has started coal production at the Narrabri underground mine in New South Wales, Australia.

The mine will initially produce 500,000t-700,000t of coal a year using continuous miners and eventually six million tons of low ash, high energy, low sulphur thermal and PCI coal for the export market, the company said.

Whitehaven has invested approximately $227m to develop the mine.

The project is a joint venture between Whitehaven, which has a 70% stake, and Electric Power Development, EDF Trading, Upper Horn Investments, Daewoo International Corporation and Korea Resources, each with a 7.5% interest.
