Guatemala Suspends Goldcorp Mine Operations

The Government of Guatemala said it would suspend the Goldcorp-owned Merlin mine following complaints it is contaminating water supplies. The government said it received complaints from the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights on behalf of communities residing near the mine.

In a statement, the government said it will comply with a request for a suspension of operations in order to meet its international treaty obligations.

The suspension will be ordered even though the allegations are not confirmed through testing.

The Merlin mine produced 274,900oz of gold and 4.157 million ounces of silver in 2009.
